What’s with this Wilton Manors Protest Rally
Wilton Manors is gearing up for a revolution!
On Sunday, June 14, 2020, between 2:00pm and 4:00pm at Hagen Park Wilton Manors City Hall (2020 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors, FL 33305) a diverse group of impassioned protesters will gather under the banner of solidarity for Black Lives Matter and the end to police brutality nationwide.
However, the purpose of the “Rally for the Remedy” doesn’t just stop with the plea for police reform and the end to racial injustice, the peaceful protest is also intended to address the concerns of racial disparities within the city of Wilton Manors itself. A steady whisper has echoed in the background of our Island City in which people of color have felt ostracized for some time now.
Spearheaded by one of South Florida’s prominent gay black entertainment groups, Anthony Winn Entertainment AWE, the galvanizing rally will open with a spiritual blessing in the park at 2:00pm followed by a Spoken Word from the lovely Butterfly. Thereafter, a modest lineup of diverse LGBTQI local speakers will share their Island City struggles in earshot of city officials who will be in attendance.
Everyone is encouraged to attend the rally from local business owners, to staff and employees as well as the community-at-large. This is a moment for all of us to come together with the objective to learn, love, heal, and support. To show solidarity for our trans brothers and sisters, to show support for people of color, to rally against racial injustice and police brutality, to say the names of those whose lives have been lost unjustly.
The second phase of the “Rally for the Remedy” will consist of a group march at 2:45pm up the Drive crossing on 6th street back down to Hagen Park where then event organizers will open the stage to anyone in the public who wants to voice their personal experiences of racial injustice in Wilton Manors. To close out the rally a moment of silence will sweep over the crowd in memory of the lives lost to injustice.
The rally and march will persist come rain or shine so please make sure to dress for the weather. Wear your sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. And consider bringing an umbrella or poncho as the weather does call for a slight chance of rain. Above all, bring your voice and creative signs to convey your message of strength, unity, and love. This is the time to let the world know exactly how you feel as the entire event will be live-streamed.
To guarantee the safety of all attendees, rally organizers ask that everyone please wear a mask in accordance with COVID-19 (Coronavirus) safety guidelines. Event organizers will have a limited amount of masks available so do try to bring your own; Purell hand sanitizers and water will also be available at the rally.
